Scott M. Rodell
Scott M. Rodell is a martial artist, author, and teacher of Yang style Taijiquan. He is an internationally recognized expert of Chinese historical swordsmanship.
Best known for his work reviving Chinese Historical Swordsmanship, he is widely considered the father of the renaissance of this art. Rodell travels frequently to Europe, across the US and to Australia and Canada to lead seminars.
Having handled over 3000 antique swords his expertise is often called upon by museums and collectors around the world. He is regularly featured in media including the hit Youtube series "Man At Arms: Reforged".
Author of 10 books, his writing is required reading for anyone looking to return to the original way of the Chinese sword.
Scott Rodell's webinar series are great. I was surprised how well on-line learning works in this context. Scott is very knowledgeable about all aspects of the Chinese sword, and he's very clear in his instruction. He talks you through each cut and deflection, and shows the techniques from all angles. It's as good as being there.

Here are a few answers to our most common questions
I don’t have a sword how can I start?
No problem. Any stick, bamboo stalk, or common dowel from the hardware store will do to get you started. You can even just cut a section off an old broom stick. Once you have more experience we can recommend practice swords for you.
I’m a beginner with no experience, can I join the Academy?
Yes, certainly. All lessons are taught from the ground up in detail and founded on the basic cuts. We give you the building blocks to construct a solid practice and prepare you for future swordplay. Every movement is demonstrated from multiple angles throughout each Webinar.
Can I really learn online?
Hundreds of martial artists, stunt choreographers, brand new beginners, people from all sorts of backgrounds and different experience levels, have all answered that question. And the answer is a definite "Yes"!
I’ve practiced sword forms for years what can I expect out of the Academy?
Sword work at the Academy is 100% swordplay oriented. Swordplay meaning full contact, free swordplay with realistic weapons. Every technique is taught and demonstrated in terms of responding to the type of actions that a duifang is going to come at you with when he or she is genuinely looking to land a blow. The cuts, deflections, footwork, and strategies presented are not based on theories of how the form might work, but on Rodell Laoshi’s over three decades of experience facing swordsmen from various traditions. If you are looking to move beyond forms to practical, realistic application, the Academy is where you want to be.
I am not a Taiji guy. Can I still benefit from training at the Academy?
Yes you can. The instruction is founded in the basic cuts that are central to all systems of Chinese Swordsmanship. Practitioners from Xingyiquan, Baguazhang, Shaolinquan, Wing Chun, Bakmei, Mantis, Karate, and even European systems of swordsmanship have been training with Rodell Laoshi and hosting seminars with him for many years.
